From the C.S. Lewis file …

The great Christian apologist C.S. Lewis offered the following observation:

“If you read history, you will find that the Christians who did most for the present world were just those who thought most of the next … . It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this. Aim at Heaven and you will get earth ‘thrown in,’ aim at earth and you will get neither.”

  1. Woodson Moore says:

This truth affirms other truths and refutes a frequently voiced slander against orthodox Christians. First the slander. The lie is this: Christian preaching and teaching about the life hereafter reveals such Christian’s lack of compassion for the suffering of this world. Christian formation of many hospitals and orphanages; the maintenance of food distribution outlets; political advocacy (Wilberforce against slavery) all have been powered by Christians who took seriously the hope of Heaven and the fear of Hell.

As to truth affirmed there is the truth of the hereafter and the current ineffectiveness of Christian social efforts.
